A word scramble is the quietest Halloween game there is, which is exactly why it’s useful. Hand one out while guests arrive, while the pizza’s on its way or when a classroom party needs ten calm minutes before the costume parade.
What’s on the printable
The regular version has 24 Halloween words with the letters mixed up and a blank line beside each one. The letters come pre-scrambled, and no word is ever left in its original order. Every word is one you’d hear on Halloween night: no obscure vocabulary, no names of characters from movies.
- Puzzle page: 24 scrambled words with space to write each answer.
- Answer key: on a separate page, so you can print it for yourself and keep it away from the table.
- Optional header: add a name like “Room 12” or “The Lee Family Halloween.”
- Footer: a small partygamebook.com credit. No email sign-up and no watermark.
Most kids 8 and up can work through it on their own in 10 to 15 minutes. Younger readers do better in pairs or with the hint sheet below.
How to play
- Print one sheet per player or per team, plus one answer key for you.
- Hand out pencils. Erasers help; most people guess wrong at least once.
- Say “go” and start a 10-minute timer on your phone.
- Players unscramble as many words as they can. First to finish calls “done” and flips their sheet over.
- When time’s up, read the answers aloud from the key while players check their own sheets, or swap sheets with a neighbor.
- Most correct wins. For a tie, the player who finished first takes it.
Playing on a TV instead? Put the puzzle up on screen and let teams shout answers. The first team to call a word correctly gets the point.

Hard mode for teens and adults
The regular puzzle goes fast for grown-ups. The hard version swaps in 18 longer spooky words, most of them eight letters or more. It suits an office party, a teen sleepover or a family where the adults want their own game. Give it 15 minutes and let people work in pairs.
Halloween Word Scramble: Hard Mode
How to play: Hand each player or team a sheet and a pencil. Pairs work well for this one. Unscramble each set of letters into a spooky word. Most are 8 letters or longer. Set a timer for 15 minutes.

- POLTERGEIST
- CANDELABRA
- SUPERNATURAL
- PHANTOM
- BANSHEE

+ 6 more in the printable.
The answers, in case you need them: APPARITION, POLTERGEIST, CANDELABRA, SUPERNATURAL, PHANTOM, BANSHEE, GARGOYLE, WARLOCK, CATACOMBS, MASQUERADE, HOBGOBLIN, INCANTATION, NIGHTSHADE, CORNSTALKS, SPECTER, MIDNIGHT, TOADSTOOL, CANDLEWICK.
The longest ones, SUPERNATURAL (12 letters) and INCANTATION (11), are the hardest to sort out in your head. Put scrap paper on the table.
- Printed puzzles, one per player or team
- One answer key for the host
- Pencils with erasers
- A phone timer
- Clipboards or books to write on, if there’s no table
- Small prizes
How many to print
Print one per player plus three or four extras for late arrivals and spills. If you’re playing in teams of two or three, one sheet per team is enough, and it’s more fun that way because partners argue over the letters.
For a classroom, print one per student and a couple of spares. Early finishers can flip the sheet over and write their own scrambled words for a friend to solve.
Print the regular and hard versions on different colored paper. It’s easy to hand the right one to the right person, and nobody feels like they got the “kids’ version.”
Ways to change it up
For little kids (ages 5 to 7)
Pair each child with an older reader, or play together as one group. Read the hint aloud, then let them hunt for the matching scramble. You can also write the first letter of each answer on the line before you hand the sheets out.
For a classroom party
Run it as the calm-down game between the active ones. Set a timer, let kids work in table groups and go over the answers together on the board. Our classroom Halloween party games list has more ideas that fit a 30-minute party slot.
For a big party
Turn it into a relay. Each team gets one sheet, and players take turns solving one word before passing it on. First team to finish all 24 wins.
For the office
Leave a stack of the hard version in the break room on Monday with a box for finished sheets. Draw a winner from the correct entries at Friday’s party. Our office Halloween party games has more ideas that work at work.
For seniors
Print the regular version and read the hints aloud as a group. Talking through the letters together is often more fun than racing, and there’s no pressure on anyone who’s slower with a pencil. Our printable games for seniors have more large-print options.
Prize ideas
- A full-size candy bar or first pick from the candy bowl
- A small pumpkin or a pack of glow sticks
- For classrooms: a sticker sheet, a pencil or being line leader to the costume parade
- For adults: a mug filled with candy, or bragging rights and a paper crown
Want a whole party’s worth of printables? Our free printable Halloween games round up the rest, and you’ll find every Halloween game we make on the Halloween games page.
