Would you rather is the easiest party game there is. No board, no score sheet, no rules to explain beyond “pick one, and you can’t say neither.” The good questions do the rest.

How to play would you rather

The basic version is just a question and a choice. These steps add enough structure to keep a big group moving.

1. Sit in a circle, or around the table. Shuffle the cards and put the stack in the middle.
2. The reader draws a card and reads it aloud. Everyone picks an answer at the same time: point left for the first option, right for the second.
3. Anyone who’s alone in their choice has to defend it in one sentence. That’s usually where the laughs are.
4. Pass the stack to the next person, who reads the next card.
5. Stop whenever the energy dips. Twenty minutes is plenty for most groups.

Want points? Try “read the room.” Before each vote, the reader predicts which option most people will pick. A right guess earns a point; the first to five wins. It gives the reader something to do besides read.

Playing with two people? Each of you guesses the other’s answer before you both reveal. It’s a sneaky good way to find out how well you know someone.

Funny would you rather questions

These work with any crowd, from a sixth-grade sleepover to a retirement party. Most get a quick laugh and a quicker answer.

What can go wrong, and how to fix it

Someone always says “neither.” Make it a rule before you start: no neither, no both. If people truly can’t decide, they get five seconds and then the majority picks for them.

One person hogs the floor. Keep the defend-your-answer rule to one sentence. A kitchen timer helps.

The group is too big to hear. Above about 12 people, split into two circles with their own decks, or switch to the left-side, right-side version where everyone walks to their answer.

Questions land wrong. Read through the deck before a mixed-age party and pull anything that doesn’t fit your crowd. The death and memory questions in the hard set, for instance, can hit differently at a gathering after a loss.
