The survey game plays like the TV game show Family Feud: two teams try to guess the most popular answers to a question, and the more common the answer, the more points it’s worth. You need a host, two teams and something to slap for the face-off.

Our board below has 20 of the best all-ages questions ready to go. Add your team names and play it on a TV, or print it as a host sheet.

How to play the survey game

1. Split into two teams of three to eight people and line each team up.
2. Face-off: the first player from each team steps up. The host reads the question, and whoever slaps the table first answers. If their answer beats the other player’s, their team chooses to play or pass.
3. The playing team takes turns guessing, one player at a time, until they find every answer on the board or get three strikes.
4. After three strikes, the other team huddles and gets one guess to steal. A right answer steals all the points in the round; a wrong one leaves them with the first team.
5. Add up the points for each answer revealed. The first team to 300 wins, or play a set number of rounds and total the scores.

Plan on about three to five minutes per question. Ten questions makes a solid 40-minute game.

Tips for the host

Decide “close enough” before you start. Is “cell phone” the same as “phone”? Is “tacos” the same as “burritos”? We’d accept the first and not the second. Say your rule once, then stick to it.

Double the last round. A team that’s way behind loses interest fast. Doubling or tripling the points in the final round keeps everyone in it.

Use a paper board if you don’t have a TV. Write the answers on a poster board, cover each with a sticky note, and number the notes one to six. Peel them off as teams guess.

Watch the pace. Give each guesser about five seconds. Long pauses kill the energy, and the other team gets restless.
