Would you rather is the easiest game you can play at a Thanksgiving table. There’s nothing to set up, nothing to explain, and it works from your chair while the tryptophan jokes start. One question gets people talking; the good ones start an argument about stuffing that lasts through dessert.

The printable deck above has 45 short Thanksgiving choices, ten to a page, ready to cut. The full lists below have 160 more to read from your phone.

How to play Thanksgiving would you rather

  1. Pick a reader, or pass the phone (or card basket) around the table so everyone gets a turn.
  2. The reader asks one question out loud.
  3. Everyone answers at the same time: point left for the first choice, right for the second. No “neither,” no “both.”
  4. Anyone in the smaller group explains their choice in one or two sentences.
  5. Pass to the next reader and keep going until dessert, or until someone takes the stuffing question personally.

Want a winner? Before each vote, the reader guesses which side the majority will pick. A right guess earns a point, and the first to five wins. It gives the reader a reason to pay attention to everyone else.

Only two of you? Each person guesses the other’s answer before you both reveal. It’s a sneaky test of how well you know someone.

Running it in a classroom

Have students stand up and move to the left side of the room for the first choice and the right side for the second. It gets everyone moving, and you can see every answer at a glance. Call on one or two students from each side to explain their pick, then ask for a show of hands on who changed their mind.

For a writing version, give each student one question and ask for three sentences explaining their answer. For older students, add a rule: they have to argue for the side they didn’t pick.

Family and tradition questions

This round is about how your family does Thanksgiving, so it usually turns into stories about past years. Let it.

Gratitude questions for the end of the meal

A gentler round for when the plates are cleared. These are good for a smaller table or a family that likes to go around and say what they’re thankful for, but wants an easier way into it.

  1. Would you rather thank someone from your past or someone in your life right now?
  2. Would you rather get a heartfelt letter or write one?

Host tip:

Mix the rounds. Three food questions, one funny, one hard, then back to food. A long run of hard or deep questions stalls a table fast, and a silly one right after brings everyone back.

Tips for a mixed-age table

Say you’re hosting 14 people from age 5 to 85. Let the youngest kids read the kids’ questions (or repeat them after a grown-up), and give the teens the funny and hard rounds. Nobody should have to answer a question they’d rather skip; a pass is always allowed.

Keep the pace quick. If a question gets a big debate, let it run for a minute and then move on. The game works best when it feels like conversation, not a quiz.

And let people add their own. Kids are especially good at inventing questions, and theirs tend to be the strangest ones of the day.

What you need

  • A phone with this page open, or the printed This or That cards
  • Cardstock and scissors if you’re printing the cards
  • A bowl or basket to draw cards from
  • Scrap paper for keeping score, if you’re playing for points

More Thanksgiving games

For a year-round list, our 300 would you rather questions cover every crowd. If your group wants something with a bit more structure after dinner, the Thanksgiving fill-in-the-blank story takes ten minutes and gets everyone involved, and our Thanksgiving games for family sorts more ideas by when to play them. Every Thanksgiving printable we make is on the Thanksgiving games page.

Questions hosts ask

How do you play Thanksgiving would you rather?

One person reads a question, everyone points to their choice at the same time, and anyone in the smaller group explains their pick. Pass the reading to the next person.

Are these Thanksgiving would you rather questions OK for kids?

Yes. Every question is family friendly, and there's a round written for kids about 4 to 10 plus a round for classrooms.

How do I use would you rather in a classroom?

Have students walk to the left or right side of the room to vote, then ask a few from each side to explain. It also works as a short writing prompt.

Is there a printable version?

Yes. Our free This or That cards print ten or eight to a page, with a Thanksgiving deck for all ages and a kids' deck.

By the Party Game Book editors. Every game here is free to print for personal, classroom and non-commercial use. How we make and check our games.
